Nightmare lore and associated lore

First Watch this instrumental, to get some of the idea
NOTE : Sky does not equal Heaven; the opposite of Heaven is Hell!
  "a Nightmare
journey /date/ holiday/party/etc"

But where does the word  "nightmare "come from?

. A     night     mare    ( mare, a female horse = yegua, cf: a male horse =a stallion)

from a very very old  prechristian Anglosaxon idea, from lore, folklore if you like  :
The night mare caused nightmares , visiting you to ride YOU while you slept.!

Even today , English people don't eat horses, won't eat horses, can't eat horses, can't imagine much worse than eating horses.......
Something about horses goes very deep, it comes   from pre-christian roots, what exactly we only have hints of ....
like" nightmare"
or this song........

Ghost Cowboy holding  hot branding iron, riding ghost horse in the sky)

cf
the song "ghost riders in the sky"
A modern, diabolically attractive update of an old and fearful idea.A trap of the devil for moderns.

The song is about a cowboy who has a vision of red-eyed, fire-breathing cattle ,thundering across the sky,  chased by the ghosts of damned cowboys(aka cowpokes).
One of these damned cowboy ghosts warns him that if he does not change his ways he, too,  will be doomed (=destined) to join them, forever "trying to catch the Devil's herd across the endless skies."
More than fifty different artists have recorded versions of this classic. Charting versions were recorded by Vaughn Monroe, Bing Crosby, and by Burl Ives. Other versions were recorded by ROY ROGERS, FRANKIE LAINE, MARTY ROBBINS, JOHNNY CASH, DUANE EDDY, PEGGY LEE, AND MANY OTHERS!

The basic  idea is easy, you will need to check some vocabulary

An old cowboy/cowpoke went riding out one dark and windy day
Upon a ridge (cresta)he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a mighty herd(manada) of red-eyed cows he saw
A-plowing(to plow/plough= arrar, mover de forma tradajosa) through the ragged(rag=harapo, ragged hecho jirones, describe  las nubes etc en el cielo) sky and up the cloudy draw(draw, =technical cowboy word for slope etc)

Their brands(= marca, de to brand, marcar al fuego) were still on fire and their hooves(hoof= pezuña) were made of steel
Their horns( cuernos) were black and shiny and their hot breath he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky
For he saw the Riders coming hard and he heard their mournful cry:

Yippie yi Ohhhhh
Yippie yi yaaaaay
Ghost Riders in the sky

Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred, their shirts all soaked with sweat
He's riding hard to catch that herd, but he ain't(=hasn't) caught them yet
'Cause they've got to ride forever on that range( zona de pastoreo libre, gran extension , alcance, ambito) up in the sky
On horses snorting fire
As they ride on, hear their cry:

Yippee etc

As the riders loped (to lope = run /ride/ walk fast smoothly and easily )on by him ,he heard one call his name
"If you want to save your soul(=Alma) from Hell a-riding on our range
Then, cowboy, change your ways (To change one's ways= to reform one's conduct) today, or with us you will ride
Trying to catch the Devil's herd, across these endless skies"

Yippie yi Ohhhhh
Yippie yi Yaaaaay

Ghost Riders in the sky
Ghost Riders in the sky
Ghost Riders in the sky

Legend:
Nearly a  hundred years ago in Cattle country, USA,
A 12 year-old  working country-boy rode his horse (stallion or mare?) to the top of an Arizona hill one afternoon with an old cowboy  to check a windmill.
A big storm was building and they needed to lock the windmill blades down ( Around cartagena, the windmills have sails, not blades) before the wind hit.
When they finished, they paused to watch the clouds darken and spread across the sky.
As lightning flashed, with bolts of thunder, (= truenos) the old cowboy told the boy to watch closely  to see :
the devil's herd  of cattle, their eyes red and hooves flashing,  stampede( a/to stampede, what language do you think this word comes from?) ahead of phantom horsemen.
The old cowboy warned the youth that if he didn't watch himself, he would someday be up there with them, chasing  cattle  for all eternity.
The terrified boy jumped on his horse and all but took off for the  safety of home. That boy was the writer of this song .
Years later, he recalled that scary, dark afternoon.
On his birthday in  1948, Stan Jones sat outside his  home in Death Valley ( that is the genuine name!)and wrote "Ghost Riders In The Sky."

For Modern Anglosphere young men, a legend thousands of years old still lives, thanks to this song.

My opinion : pierde toda la gracia tanto de la letra como de la musica. Ademas....

There are modern versions , think heavy metal and motorbikes, but with the traditional lyrics(=words of a song)
